Our daily lives tend to be governed by emotions. We usually make our decisions small or big based on whether we are happy, angry, sad, sorrowful, bored, or frustrated. Depending on the feelings they provoke we choose our behaviors and hobbies.

Anger is a normal emotion that everyone experiences from time to time. However, when it becomes excessive and difficult to manage, it can lead to serious physical and psychological problems. It is important to be aware of the symptoms, causes, and treatments for anger issues so you can better manage this emotion.

Anger issues can manifest in many ways, from feeling irritable or easily provoked, to lashing out at others or engaging in destructive behavior. It is important to recognize the signs early on so that appropriate measures can be taken. Common causes of anger issues include unresolved trauma, stress, depression, and/or anxiety.

Anger issues symptoms

Anger is a normal emotion, but it can become problematic when it is not managed properly. Unmanaged anger can lead to physical and mental health issues and can manifest as problems in relationships. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of anger so that you can take steps to manage it before it gets out of control.

Common signs and symptoms of anger include:

  • Feeling tense, irritable, or frustrated,
  • Having difficulty concentrating,
  • Feeling overwhelmed or
  • Having a short temper.
  • Physical signs may include:
  • Clenched fists or jaw,
  • Flushed face,
  • Rapid breathing or heart rate, and
  • Increased sweating.

People with intense anger may also experience feelings of guilt or shame afterward. They may not agree with their reactions or anything verbal they have said which will begin a loop of guilt and shame.

If you recognize any of these symptoms in yourself, it is important to seek help from a professional who can guide how to manage your anger in healthy ways.

Causes of anger issues

Anger is a normal emotion that everyone experiences from time to time. However, when it starts to affect daily life, it can become an issue. There are many causes of anger issues, including unresolved conflicts, stress, trauma, and mental health issues. It is important to understand the underlying causes of anger to effectively manage it.

Anger can be triggered by external events such as a stressful situation, or it can be caused by internal factors such as feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. Common causes of anger include feeling threatened or disrespected, feeling powerless or frustrated, experiencing a loss or injustice, and being exposed to negative emotions like fear and anxiety.

While an individual may show anger to many triggers, the instant thought and the way they perceive and interpret the situation can depend on their past experiences, childhood experiences, and other traumatic experiences they have faced in life.

Unresolved conflicts can build up and a person might feel them piling up, which can cause an anger burst at any moment. This can confuse all parties involved because the anger burst might be disproportionate to the current situation.

The current situation of the person can also cause them to have frequent anger outbursts. It could mean that an individual is currently facing a lot of stress that makes them displace their anger onto other individuals.

Anger issues treatment

Treatment for anger issues usually involves therapy, medication, and learning how to cope with anger using relaxation techniques. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps individuals identify their triggers and develop skills for managing their emotions more effectively. Medication may also be prescribed depending on the severity of the symptoms. With proper treatment and support, people with anger issues can learn how to better manage their emotions and lead healthier lives.

How to deal with anger issues?

We have all felt anger whether as a fleeting annoyance or as full-fledged rage. Anger is a natural human emotion, usually not so healthy. It is also called a secondary emotion as we prefer to use anger to defend ourselves from certain sensitive feelings. But when it gets out of control it may become problematic and leads to aggression, outbursts, or even create harmful problems like job issues, personal relationships, also the overall quality of life that may result problematic. Managing anger is important to minimize the psychological and physical effects it may have on an individual.

Before anger escalates, you can use these strategies to overcome anger issues.

  • Identify your triggers
Understanding how and which events are affecting you can help take control of the situation and avoid unnecessary aggravation. It is important to take an observation of your daily routine and try to identify activities, times of day, people, places, or situations that trigger irritable or angry feelings.
  • Exercise
It is one of the most reliable sources that can help you minimize anger and relax your nerves. Go for a run, ride your bike, or play games outside. All of this will help your mind and body, making you healthy inside out.
  • Count down
Whenever you feel your temper attacking you just start counting either normal or reverse. When you count, your heart rate will slow down, and your rage will possibly fade away.
  • Practice Gratitude
Take a moment to reflect on what is right when it feels all wrong. Try to remember all the good things you have in your life and this can help you neutralize all your anger by feeling more positive about life.
  • Tune in to music
Music can do a miracle. Tune in to any of your favourite tracks and let the music take away all your negative feelings.
  • Give yourself a break
Take out some time for yourself and spend it alone away from everyone. During this time you can process events and restore your emotions to neutrality. You will find it really motivating to get it into your everyday life.
  • Maintain a Journal
Often, we are unable to express ourselves orally, in that case, it is always better to write all your thoughts down, like how are you feeling, how you want to respond, and what you want to do. This will help you calm your mind and re-evaluate your emotions.
