Overcome Loneliness

As human beings are social creatures, being surrounded by family/friends makes us happier and healthier being socially connected is the key to our mental and emotional wellbeing. However, when we do not feel connected even when surrounded by known people, we feel left out or have a feeling of being treated unfairly, that feeling leads to loneliness.

We feel lonely for several reasons, including simple social awkwardness and intentional isolation. Some people may even feel lonely when they surround themselves with unwanted people because they do not connect with those people.

Everyone experiences loneliness sometimes at any stage of his or her life, but it has been seen very common young people struggle with loneliness. A recent loneliness survey by Cigna  (2018) indicates that adults (ages 18-22) are feeling lonelier than almost any other population.

Loneliness is the state of feeling alone — feeling isolated from others, thinking as no-one cares, as if you are not part of a social or family network. Loneliness is the negative feeling that arises when our social needs are unmet by the quantity and quality of our current social needs.

As social beings, we rely on safe, secure social surroundings to survive and thrive. When we begin to feel lonely, we experience feelings of vulnerability, which can take a toll on both our bodies and our minds.
