PTSD is a mental health condition that gets triggered by a traumatic event - experiencing or witnessing it. Being caught in a natural disaster or having been a victim of a bomb blast, being in a serious accident, or a war-related scenario can be examples of such traumatic events. People who undergo PTSD, experience intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings about these events. Even after years of the actual traumatic event, they are disturbed by nightmares and flashbacks.

The symptoms of PTSD may be as follows:

  • Repetitive, intrusive thoughts and dreams about the traumatic event

  • Negative thoughts and feeling that a similar event may happen again.

  • Avoidance of places, people or situations that may be a reminder of the traumatic event.

  • Having reactive symptoms or arousals such as restlessness, anxiety, and sleeplessness.

Such symptoms might show up within 3 months after the traumatic event, but in some cases may even come up after several years. The severity and treatment duration varies from 6 months to longer than a year.

The stats are shocking:

  • 70% of adults experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime.

  • 20% of people who experience a traumatic event will develop PTSD.

  • About 8 million people have PTSD in a given year.

  • 1 in 13 people will develop PTSD at some point in their life.

For people with PTSD, the intrusive thoughts are such that they hamper day-to-day living and productivity. They negatively affect the personal relationships and bais functioning of the individual.

People with PTSD, find it difficult to attribute these symptoms to their mental illness. Because of reasons such as these, it is a less focussed part of mental health and is put on a back seat when it comes to treatment!

But this is an important area to be focused upon, to provide an open mind space to such people. Through the right and timely interventions it is possible to win the battle against PTSD and online counselling can greatly help overcome PTSD.
