Meeting with a therapist to resolve unhelpful behaviours, beliefs, feelings, or relationship problems is known as therapy, psychotherapy, or counselling.

Unfortunately, at times people unintentionally make mistakes while taking counseling sessions that makes the outcome of therapy poor.

1. Missing out on homework:

When the client does not show sincerity in doing the therapy work or tasks given  by the psychologist, it creates obstacles in effectiveness of therapy. This may happen due to lack of comprehension regarding therapy work.

2. Increased Absenteeism:

Due to lack of awareness regarding mental health, people tend to show irregularity in counseling sessions which in turn leads to poor prognosis in therapy. Frequent absenteeism generally breaks the flow of sessions and also hampers the rapport formation between therapist and the client.

3. Being Dishonest:

Therapeutic relationship is based on non judgemental attitude of therapist and mutual trust between the two. However, when the client is dishonest in therapy, the effort of the therapist goes in vain. This can happen unintentionally also when client is not consciously aware about his or her resistance.

4. Unreasonable Expectations from therapist:

When client lacks patience, they tend to over expect from the therapist regarding therapy outcomes. This may create trouble and hamper the quality of therapy. Counseling sessions provide long term results but as it does not involve medications, it requires persistence and consistency from the client which when fails, leads to poor results in counseling sessions.

5. Over Generalizations:

At times, due to bad past experience with any other therapist, client generalizes it and does not put effort in reaching towards goals of therapy. Lack of motivation and unwillingness shown by the client also contributes in lowering the effectiveness of online counseling sessions.

In order to reduce chances of mistakes by the client, it is important to spread awareness regarding the same. Therapists can contribute to this by keeping these areas in mind and use variety of tools and techniques to build a strong rapport and make therapy sessions more interesting.
